It's March! What should I be doing?
SENIORS
Tour some schools! March/April are great months to go on admitted students tours
Keep your grades up! Yes, senioritis is real. So is the fact that the school you attend will see your complete transcript. That highly selective school you just worked your butt off to get into won’t take kindly to seeing your 4.0 become a 2.0.
Make some summer plans. You may or may not know where you’ll be come September, but you CAN figure out where you’ll be in July. Organize a road trip, sign up to volunteer, take a class. What would you do when you don’t need to brag about your summer to a college?
JUNIORS
Tour some schools as well! It’s great to see schools when actual college students are there. If you can tour some schools, even ones that you don’t think you want to attend, you can great feel for that particular school and also that size and type of school.
Be a leader (or a facilitator)!: Can you organize or help to organize an event at your school, your church, your synagogue, around your neighborhood? If you see an opportunity to help someone else, to make someone’s day with a fun event, to share your talents, take it!
Prep for a test (if you need it): Almost all the Ivies are back to test-required. Most engineering schools really want to see a high SAT or ACT Math score, at the very least. The end of 11th grade can be a great time to take a test or retake one.
Plan next year’s classes! Remember that schools want to see that you have taken advantage of what you have available at your school. Maybe you are not a fan of math, and you know that you only need 3 years of math to graduate. That may be true, but students who avoid difficult classes may find their applications don’t stack up to others’ who challenged themselves all four years.
SOPHOMORES
Get involved! You’re a year and a half into high school. Always wanted to try to act in the school play, try out for the tennis team, run for VP of the Chess Club? Now’s the time to try it
Talk with your counselor about 11th grade classes! Maybe you’re now ready for those Honors and AP Classes. Maybe you have to take pre-Calc in 11th grade in order to take Calc in 12th. Planning ahead can set yourself up well.
Start to think about summer activities: Research camps based on subjects that interest you. You’d be surprised how easy it can be to find some great opportunities.
FRESHMEN
Congrats on making it so far! High school can be a little scary. You’re more than halfway through your first year. Remember that while not all schools will use your 9th grade transcript for your GPA, they WILL see it. Try your best to do as well as you can. Often it’s about staying organized!
Get organized! 9th grade is often rough for kids. I see it as both a teacher and a father. Maybe you’ve never used a planner or a calendar. Maybe you think it’s just not your thing. I get it. Start by mapping out tomorrow’s classes and homework. Do that each day. It’ll just take 10 minutes. Then move on to a couple of days at a time. Before you know it you’re handing everything in on time and you probably have more time to hang out with your friends, game, etc.
